Ahem. The arts community is well represented aren’t they? Or CBC faces that are paid to be in the public eye? Not much philanthropy in those nominations.

Personally, I think that the Order of Canada nominees should reflect significant contributions over a lengthy period of time. In essence, that will usually mean an older person who has piled up the accomplishments into a merit worthy nomination.

I can think of a General Practitioner who led a renaissance of community based care into a healthcare model that other jurisdictions have adopted. He was elevated into the Order as an elderly white male. GASP! His pride in receiving the award was eclipsed by the thanks expressed by his community to nominate him in the first place. These kinds of Canadians are to be found in all areas of our society and it would be sad to see people being discriminated against because of their age, race and gender.
